Estimating maximum fine-fraction organic carbon in UK grasslands

چکیده

Abstract. Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration across agroecosystems worldwide can contribute to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing levels atmospheric CO2. Stabilisation (OC) in fine soil fraction (< 20 µm) is considered an important long-term store SOC, and saturation deficit (difference between measured OC estimated maximum fraction) frequently used assess SOC potential following linear regression equation developed Hassink (1997). However, this approach often taken without any assessment fit soils being studied. The statistical limitations have previously been noted, giving rise proposed use boundary line (BL) analysis quantile (QR) provide more robust estimates stabilisation. objectives work were suitability (1997) estimate fine-fraction UK grassland varying sward ages evaluate regression, methods OC. A chronosequence 10 grasslands was sampled, order relationship age (time since last reseeding event) predicted Significantly different equations show that does not accurately reflect when determined using proportion µm, %) (g C per kg soil). QR stabilisation almost double BL (0.89 ± 0.074, 0.43 0.017 0.57 0.052 g soil, respectively). Sward had inconsistent effect on variables Fine-fraction made up 4.5 % 55.9 total implying there may be either high for additional these or protection aggregates predominant soils. This highlights need ensure predict situ, resulting accurate assessments potential.

Soil Organic Carbon Content and Stocks in Relation to Grazing Management in Semi-Arid Grasslands of Kenya

Rangelands cover approximately 85% of Kenya’s land mass and is a major resource for livestock farming with a considerable potential to mitigate climate change, yet these lands are stressed differently by various management. Our study aimed at determining the influence of grazing management systems (rotational, continuous and ungrazed) on soil organic carbon stocks in Yoani ranch located in the ...

Carbon Sequestration on Mined Lands Supporting Abandoned Grasslands: Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation and Distribution

Reclaimed surface coal mines in the eastern United States are commonly revegetated with grasses and legumes. The productivity and carbon sequestration potential of the vegetation varies with the condition and nature of the mined site and soil. This study was conducted to determine the distribution pattern of soil carbon stock on 9 mined grasslands reclaimed after the passage of SMCRA in 1977. M...

Aged riverine particulate organic carbon in four UK catchments.

The riverine transport of particulate organic matter (POM) is a significant flux in the carbon cycle, and affects macronutrients and contaminants. We used radiocarbon to characterise POM at 9 riverine sites of four UK catchments (Avon, Conwy, Dee, Ribble) over a one-year period. High-discharge samples were collected on three or four occasions at each site. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) was...
